S40C steel is under the standard JIS G4051 S40C and we can regard it as high carbon steel. JIS G4051 S40C steel has good high strength, good machinability, medium cold deformation, poor weldability, no temper brittleness, low hardenability and water quenching crack easily. S40C is mainly used in the condition of conditioning or normalizing and the properties are similar. S40C is used in the manufacture of parts under high stress after surface hardening. JIS G4051 S40C steel is suitable in manufacturing crank spindle drive shaft, piston rod, connecting rod, sprocket, gear, etc. When S40C is used for weld assembly, it is needed to preheat and slow cooling after welding.
